Bennett, Herman L. African Kings and Black Slaves: Sovereignty and Dispossession in the Early Modern Atlantic. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2019.
Examines early modern African-European encounters, focusing on Iberian colonialism in the 15 century. This text argues that Catholic lords attempted to make contact with African sovereigns from their earliest encounters. This book suggests that reinterpreting African and European moments of contact through both diplomacy and politics helps combat dominant discourses about the slave trade. The work engages in early modern European political theory, African and Iberian history, and race.
