Aljoe, Nicole N. Creole Testimonies: Slave Narratives from the British West Indies, 1709-1838. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012.
Analyzes narratives of enslavement between 1709-1838 originating mostly from British-held Caribbean colonies. Aljoe argues that West Indian slave narratives have distinctive literary, generic, and rhetorical features such as “creolization” and “testimonio.” The book maintains that including the Caribbean archives contributes to discourse on narratives of enslavement and the African diaspora. This book engages in the sociohistorical contexts of the Caribbean and the Black Atlantic.
